Caroline Claus is a Brussels-based researcher, urban planner, and artist whose work focuses on urban landscapes as contexts for contemporary listening and the design of new urban space.
Her research interests include the analysis of urban sonic environments, with a particular focus on the materiality and physical form of sonic space shifts as experienced by humans and machines. Her work concentrates on understanding the position and role of sonic affect—acoustic comfort & beyond—in territorial dynamics, exploring the implications for planning and design of transitory urban space.
Caroline’s practice combines sonic ethnography, planning and design research, and artistic production. She engages in research-driven collaborations, art residencies, and consulting. The findings of her field-based research and art-driven experiments are disseminated and validated as part of a process that includes publishing, seminar and conference participation, and public listening.
Caroline studied Sociology (Ugent) and Urbanism, Spatial Planning & Design (EhB & VUB ∣ Cum Laude). She holds a PhD in Architecture from KU Leuven.
