LUW Scoreboard

LUW SCOREBOARD

Sonic UX is urban space lived through listening; Sonic Habitat is lived space constituted through sound. Listening becomes part of how urban spaces are positioned, designed, performed, occupied, and shared. A high-quality urban space supports intentional, open relations between sound, space, body, and environment. LUW invites you to score and explore the quality of sonic habitats and lived sonic UX.

METRICS DEFINITION
Sonic UX score

SONIC UX

Lived sonic experience: How do you experience the sonic qualities of the urban space?

The four dimensions of this score describe your situated experience as a listener:

Attunement: How attuned do you feel to the sounds of this urban space?

Legibility: How clear and understandable are the sounds of this urban space?

Agency: How much influence do you feel you have over your sonic experience in this urban space?

Recovery: To what extent does listening in this urban space allow you to recover from the rhythms and intensities of urban life?

DEAR Sonic Habitat score

DEAR SONIC HABITAT

Sonic qualities of urban space

What qualities does this urban space provide for sonic life?

The four DEAR dimensions of this score describe the spatial and temporal conditions that contribute to a liveable sonic habitat:

Diversity: How diverse are the sonic sources across this urban space? The range and coexistence of different sonic sources, rhythms, and presences.

Exposure: How exposed is this urban space to sound? The degree to which sound is present, persistent, or intense across the space. Lower dB(A) values score higher on the 1–5 scale.

Access: How readily can sonic refuge be accessed within this urban space?

Refuge: To what extent does the sonic environment of this space offer relief?

Sonic Mix

SOUND SOURCE MIX

Quantifies the composition of sonic sources as percentages:

SOUND SOURCES:

HUMAN: voice, footsteps, …

ANIMAL: dog bark, bird calls / song, …

TECHNO: engine roar, heat pump noise

ATMOSPHERICS: rain noise, trembling leaves sound, …

SOUND SOURCE MIX:

PRESENT SONIC MIX: Adjust the sound source registers to share your observations of sound sources present in the urban space.

DESIRED SONIC MIX: Adjust the Sound Source Registers to compose your ideal sonic environment.

Sonic Spatial Motif

SONIC SPATIAL MOTIF

A recurring or distinctive sonic pattern characterized by its spatial presence, movement, positioning, and relationship to its surrounding environment.

CATEGORY: Select the sonic source the motif belongs to.

SONIC SPATIALITY: Describe how the spatial sound motif inhabits, moves through, and interacts with space.

SONIC AFFECTIVITY: To what extent does this sonic spatial motif encourage you to move away from, or engage with and stay within, the space?
